Delcastle Technical High Students Demonstrate Leadership Growth at SYLP Conference
Student leaders from our various organizations returned from the Siegfried Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) conference with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact on our school community.
SYLP offers unique leadership development opportunities for students in grades 8-12, fostering personal growth, community engagement, and essential leadership skills. Our students had the chance to connect with peers from across the region, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and gain valuable insights into effective leadership.
Here's what some of our students had to say about their experience:
- Kamora Jones, Digital Media '26: "The most impactful lesson I learned was the importance of setting ambitious goals and believing in oneself. SYLP helped me realize that personal growth is often tied to stepping outside of my comfort zone."
- Anasesha Mathan, Biomedical Science '27: "SYLP taught me the value of empathy, active listening, and collaboration. I realized that effective leaders create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered."
- Ameir Rogers, Chem Lab '25: "The conference reinforced the significance of character development and its impact on leadership. I learned that true leaders inspire others through their actions and values."
- Amaya Regis, Auto Technology '25: "SYLP helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and develop the confidence to share my ideas. I realized that authentic leadership requires vulnerability and a willingness to take risks."
- Mya Givens, Medical Assisting '26: "The student panel discussions were particularly insightful. Learning from my peers' experiences helped me identify my own leadership strengths and areas for improvement."
As our students return to Delcastle, they are eager to apply the leadership skills they have developed at SYLP to make a difference in our school community. By promoting inclusivity, fostering collaboration, and inspiring their peers, they are committed to creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
Beyond the conference, these students are already making a significant impact. Anasesha Mathan, for example, is actively involved in various school clubs and organizations, demonstrating her dedication to community service and leadership. She has taken on leadership roles in Student Council, NHS, HOSA, SkillsUSA, and the Class of 2027 Executive Council, showcasing her ability to effectively collaborate with others and drive positive change.
Ameir Rogers is another outstanding example of student leadership. As a member of NHS, STCO, Drama Club, and Science Olympiad, he has demonstrated his commitment to academic excellence and extracurricular involvement. His participation in these organizations has allowed him to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
Mya Givens has also been actively involved in school activities, including Leading Ladies, Black Student Union, and Track & Field. Her involvement in these groups has helped her develop strong interpersonal skills and a sense of community. She has shown a particular interest in mentoring younger students and promoting diversity and inclusion.
The SYLP conference has had a profound impact on these young leaders, and we are excited to see what they will accomplish in the future. Their dedication, passion, and commitment to making a difference are truly inspiring.
