Holidays at the ‘Castle: Delcastle Students Unite to Spread Holiday Joy

On the evening of December 18, Delcastle Technical High School came alive with music, laughter, and the joyful buzz of community connection during its beloved annual tradition: Holidays at the ‘Castle. With the school decorated in festive cheer, student leaders from a wide array of clubs and organizations joined forces to host a free holiday celebration for local families—and the result was nothing short of magical.

This year's event showcased the power of student leadership and service, bringing together Student Council, National Honor Society, SkillsUSA, Educators Rising, Leading Ladies, Key Club, Black Student Union, plus the performing arts including Band, Drama Club, Dance, and Vocal Group to create a winter wonderland of crafts, games, and hands-on activities for children of all ages.

“Holidays at the 'Castle was an opportunity for the NHS students to directly connect with young people in the community through collaborative arts and crafts activities,” shared Mrs. Sarah Dunn, National Honor Society Advisor. “It’s important for the community to know Delcastle isn't just about CTE, but also about building connections and making an impact.”

Dunn also praised her students’ initiative and ownership:

“They chose the activities, created example crafts, and even gave me a detailed shopping list! By preparing everything ahead of time, they made the experience more engaging and welcoming for visitors.”

Collaboration in Action

The event was a true showcase of Delcastle’s “S.E.T. for Success” spirit—Serve. Empower. Transform. Students worked behind the scenes and on the front lines to make sure families felt seen, supported, and part of the school community.

“It was important to me to be part of this event because I genuinely wanted to help bring our school and community together,” said Anasesha Mathan '27 (Student Council). “We wanted families to feel comfortable, included, and connected to Delcastle.”

Donovan Gomez '27 (SkillsUSA) echoed that spirit: “I wanted to be the reason attendees felt welcomed and enjoyed what we planned out.”

And for Marcos Leon Gonzalez '26 (SkillsUSA President), the impact reached far beyond the school: “I think our event really helped show Delcastle in a new light. Maybe even changed a few minds about what Delcastle has to offer.”

The event included paint-your-own ornaments, holiday crafts, and photo ops with Santa and Mrs. Claus (courtesy of Belvedere Fire Company). Community partners like the Siegel Jewish Community Center offered festive family-friendly activities, while Taqueria Rojas provided delicious food options. Delcastle’s Culinary Arts students also served up hot cocoa and sweet treats to keep the holiday spirit (and energy levels) high.

Performing Arts Take the Stage

Midway through the evening, Delcastle’s Performing Arts programs delivered a festive show filled with music, dance, and drama. The Drama Club presented a scene from their fall play Almost, Maine, while the Delcastle Band, Dance Team, and Vocal Group performed holiday classics. The highlight of the night? A surprise faculty duet from Mr. Nick Carey and Mrs. Sarah Dunn, which earned cheers and smiles across the auditorium.

Moments That Matter

For many students, seeing their hard work come to life was the most rewarding part.

“When the kids had smiles on their faces while making the crafts, it looked like they were having a great time,” said Charlie Hewlett '26 (NHS).

“The moment we opened the doors to Delcastle for the families—I saw just how much this school has grown,” said Devin Jones '27 (SkillsUSA).

Anasesha Mathan added, “Watching us students and staff work together showed how strong and connected the Delcastle community is.”

The Power of Giving Back

More than just a celebration, Holidays at the 'Castle reinforced the power of community service and small acts of kindness.

“It takes a crew to move a ship,” said Kamora Jones '26 (SkillsUSA). “This event wouldn’t be possible without our community coming together.”

“We don’t have to give physical things,” shared Dannia Zamora '28 (SkillsUSA). “Just creating an event for families to make memories is a way to give back.”

As Marcos Leon Gonzalez reflected: “Seeing something you've worked on come to life is amazing—but knowing it made someone's day better is the real reward.”

And from Kamora: “You never know what people are going through, so this event could really mean a lot—even if it’s just a smile and a wave, or sharing conversation over hot chocolate and cookies.”

A Community Tradition, Led by Students

“Holidays at the 'Castle is now one of my favorite events of the year because it’s completely powered by student leadership,” said Mr. Anthony Tiberi, Student Activities Coordinator. “It gives our clubs and organizations a chance to give back in a joyful way—and I look forward to how they raise the bar even higher.”

The December 18 celebration was more than a holiday event—it was a reminder of what’s possible when students lead with purpose, creativity, and heart.
